Worldwide there is an increasing recognition of the role forests and mountain ecosystems play in providing water services, and the enormous costs associated to their loss due to forest degradation and deforestation. Adequate landscape management and conservation strategies are key for ensuring the provision of water services through a wide range of mechanisms, incentives schemes, funds, agreements and related instruments; both at the local level and through national programs. At a global scale, green infrastructure for water is gaining attention for channelizing additional financing to enhance the benefits ecosystems provide,

Presentation – The restoration of tropical Andean forests: progress, challenges and future perspectives

Globally, countries are looking for ways to reverse environmental degradation, as well as the loss of biodiversity and natural capital through the restoration of landscapes. Following the impetus of international order, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru have also defined quantitative restoration goals and formulated programs with the objective of achieving goals of recovery of their forest ecosystems.

Although these tropical Andean countries share the Hispanic culture, the same language and the longest mountain range in the world,


Course: Economic valuation of environmental impacts and ecosystem services

The National Agrarian University La Molina and the Andean Forests Program organize the course “Economic valuation of environmental impacts and ecosystem services”, which will run from the 23rd January to 1st February, 2017.

The classes will be held from Monday to Saturday from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. in the facilities of the National Agrarian University La Molina.

Prior to the course, from 1st January to 4th February, the workshop “Declared preference methods applied to environmental economic valuation”


Meet the experience of the Water Fund of Quiroz-Chira, Piura

Nature and Culture International and the Andean Forests Program invite you to participate in the thematic breakfast called “Quiroz-Chira Water Fund: An opportunity to develop shared actions of value for the conservation of mountain ecosystems of Piura”.

The event will be held on Tuesday, 13th November, and aims to present the advances in the implementation of the Quiroz-Chira Water Fund, an initiative that has been successfully operating as an Ecosystem Services Retribution Mechanism for the conservation of moors and Andean forests.


International Festival of Social Innovation (fiis)

As part of the International Festival of Social Innovation (fiis), the Andean Forests Program will hold a discussion on “Andean Forest Conservation” to promote the opportunities for innovation that Andean forests offer to climate change and the challenges of sustainability.

The meeting is next December 3rd in the Blue House, Barranco at 15:00 hours.

Peru celebrates National Forest Week under the slogan “Productive Forests for Life”

Since 1974 “National Forest Week” in Peru has been held in order to raise awareness among the general public about the importance of conserving and making sustainable use of forest resources.

This year, the slogan that encompasses all activities in the country is: “Productive Forests for Life” and is associated with the valorization of forests, based on the activities carried out in them.
